Brother Jacobs wrote this song about Sam, and his choice to follow Nephi as part of his Speaking From the Dust album.

I was the accompanist for a performance of the Ten Virgins Musical. I loved getting to know each woman represented by her song. In this song, you can see the light given to this woman turned into a gift she shared with many others.

Why the title "And Sam" with the & (Ampersand) in the image?

I know you have times when you felt like you were on the sidelines, left out, and overlooked.

One night when I was utterly deflated, lost, and heading towards a dark depression spiral, Jamee showed up. She dragged me to dinner and then to a movie. I was numb, not really knowing how to talk about what I was experiencing. Without pushing, she simply stayed with me. She shared her light with me for just a little while.

In the Book of Mormon, we read about the Nephites and the Lamanites and occasionally Lamuelites, Ishmelites, and many other “-ites.” (Mormon 1:8-9) However, you never read about Samuelites. In the second chapter, Sam made a choice to trust in the words of his younger brother, Nephi.

Sam continued to stay by Nephi’s side through getting the plates, broken bows, storms on the ocean, and the splitting up of his family. If you take a moment, you notice Sam is almost always mentioned as simply "...and Sam."

I invite you to look for opportunities where you can be someone’s Sam. Times when you can walk with someone and add your light to their path.

And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he believed in my words.
